At least 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Security Action on Criminal Groups
At least 64 individuals were killed in a security raid targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's past.
Four security agents were among those killed during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. More than 80 individuals were detained.
Fierce clashes broke out when approximately 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives confirmed.
The International human rights organization expressed being "appalled" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements near the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.
Local authorities stated a minimum of 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Numerous individuals were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Local Reaction
Community members have likened the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.
Transport routes stay blocked throughout the region.
Gang Growth
The criminal network have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.
Local law enforcement stated over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, together with dozens of firearms.
Raid Preparation
The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies follows a year-long investigation.
Many of the individuals are thought to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are currently hiding in the metropolitan area.
