Blast Claims Three Law Enforcement Officers During Property Removal Action in Northern Italy
A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen people got wounded in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The blast took place as police and firefighters approached the property close to the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.
Arrests and Aftermath
Two individuals were arrested at the scene and a third person who ran away following the explosion was apprehended not long after. All three have been admitted to hospital.
The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene displayed the building left as a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
Background and Motive
The head of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the three owners.
Negotiators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings caused the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he added.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the interior minister said.
Injuries and Destruction
Injured individuals by the incident consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The official believed the detonation had happened on a level above the doorway and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being activated”.
Local Response
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed Italian media, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
