Scorching conditions and raging wildfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels forecast to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major heatwave warning has been declared across much of the south-west.

This situation come after recent bushfires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of properties and loss of life. Intense heat alerts have additionally been activated for the coming days in parts of SA and NSW, as a system of high pressure moves eastward, bringing blazing heat to much of the area.

The mix of extremely dry vegetation and unbroken heat presents a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Elsewhere, a metropolis was plunged into darkness recently after powerful winds compromised the city’s electrical network, with falling trees bringing down electricity cables. Meanwhile, a region known for its clear skies and plentiful sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast periods on record. A specific type of fog, which usually lingers for only a few days, has been remarkably extensive and long-lasting this year, keeping temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades.
