American flight controllers are more and more looking for second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays due to weather and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy said he expects the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, can I secure an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports said flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest since the closure began.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended halt in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," the official said.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth most active airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA notice was issued at 8:45 AM local time on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were postponed an mean of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the authority indicated DFW, the second most active airfield in the country, could encounter problems from low staffing later in the day.
