We are checking images and video circulated earlier today that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
