Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Chief Executive Steps Down Following Shift Into Chicken.
A chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who suggested the United Kingdom might have reached pizza saturation while expanding the company into poultry items has been replaced after conflicts with its board.
Leadership Change
Rennie is departing after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's seeks a long-term chief.
The outgoing executive, who served at the company for over 20 years, had aimed to shift Britain's leading pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, stating recently there was not “significant expansion” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He said poultry was the fastest-growing menu item in the international market.
Board Disagreements
Sources suggest that there was tension between the CEO and the governance team over his focus and business vision, although the company's release said he was departing “by mutual agreement”.
New Product Launch
In the autumn, the chain introduced its Chick 'N' Dip brand – which the former chief described as a “bold new chapter” for the organization – and is testing it in over 200 locations in the north-west of England and the province.
While the company is still intending to launch it across its almost 1,400 stores in the coming year as scheduled, it considers fried chicken as a supplement for its main pizza offerings.
Board Comment
The Domino's chair, the Domino's chairman, stated: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and performance improvement in our primary operations. We are concentrating on identifying the ideal CEO to lead the systematic rollout of that expansion plan.”
Market Difficulties
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the British Isles, said orders dipped by 1.5 percent in the Q3. In the summer, it cautioned that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the lead-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a significant fall in half-year profits.
Other pizza operators are also facing challenges. Pizza Hut revealed the closure of dozens of outlets a last month, after the company behind its British operations faced financial collapse.
Health Efforts
Trying to keep up with market shifts towards healthier eating, the company has rolled out light products, such as its Thin & Crispy selection of bakes below 400 calories as well as meat-free and allergy-friendly options. A big pepperoni bake has over 2,300 kcal. A big margherita has 2,171 kcal, while a personal has 909 calories.
Interim Management
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and was formerly with the gaming group William Hill. It is thought that she does not want to take on the CEO position long-term.
She commented: “Our team has a multiple ongoing expansion and performance initiatives that we will be focused on executing at a rapid rate.”
She added these involved further work on the company's procurement system and product development, and its loyalty scheme.
The pizza chain is also in need of a permanent finance director until 16 March, when a new appointee comes aboard from the beverage producer a well-known firm. For now, Richard Snow is temporary CFO.
