Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Earn First Wins After Player Detentions
The Miami Heat scored 86 opening half scores against the Grizzlies
The Heat claimed a crushing 146-114 victory over the Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after guard Rozier was arrested for suspected illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained in connection with a broad FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they put up 86 opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37-year existence.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later said Terry had the support of the team.
"We support him. Full support," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."
Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is important to everyone. He has made a beneficial influence on our team.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers also secured their initial match after the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 win against the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner also mentioned an league probe into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they revealed recently was an indictment.
"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
