Taliban Utilized Abandoned British Equipment to Find Local Nationals Who Worked With Allied Troops, Investigation Is Told

A confidential source has revealed an official investigation that the UK abandoned confidential equipment enabling the militant group to locate local individuals that had served with international military.

Information Leak Puts Numerous in Danger

The whistleblower, identified as Person A, testified that Afghans affected by the information breach were advised to relocate and switch their contact details to protect themselves from militant forces.

MPs are looking into the UK government's handling of a massive leak of private information involving approximately 19k Afghans who had applied to move to Britain to flee militant rule.

The Information Breach Happened

A spreadsheet containing confidential details, comprising identities, phone numbers and sometimes relative details, was mistakenly released by a worker employed at UK special forces headquarters in early 2022.

The breach became known only in August 2023, when details of nine people who had sought to relocate to Britain appeared on online platforms.

Militant Technology

Many believe there's a false assumption that militant forces are without the same sort of facilities that we have,” she told lawmakers.

Under inquiry about if militant forces had access to sophisticated technology, the whistleblower stated: “They've got everything.”

Consequences of the Security Lapse

Initial findings submitted to the investigation indicated that at least 49 family members and co-workers of people concerned by the incident had been murdered.

A gag order regarding the leak was put in force in August 2023 and restricted relevant facts concerning it from media reporting until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, Person A and the volunteer organization associated with told individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “suspicions that certain devices had been breached”.

“Our suggestion was that they moved when possible and altered their mobile numbers. Those were the primary information that, should militant forces obtained this information, would result in identification and capture,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

Person A disputed that an official review carried out by an ex-government employee had been wrong to conclude that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are not confronting militant forces; they live secretly. Everything boils down to past work history.”

Person A described disturbing violence experienced by affected individuals, comprising electrocution, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.

“Instances include young kids who have had their arms broken to force relatives to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
