The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 people perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
