The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.

This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
