The Reform UK leader Claims Educators of ‘Poisoning Our Kids’ on Racial Topics
Nigel Farage has asserted that teachers would go on strike shortly after a success at the polls for his party, accusing them of “poisoning our kids” by telling students that black pupils are victims and white children oppressors.
At a gathering for a private US Christian college, the politician expressed his viewpoint on the UK education system, claiming that the “Marxist left” had “now in control of our education system”.
“I’m anticipating a teachers’ strike soon after winning the next general election,” he remarked during a Q&A session.
“They are poisoning our kids. They are telling them to feel guilt about their nation. They are telling an eight-year-old black child that he is oppressed and a white child of the same age that he is an oppressor. They create division, not uniting us. They are feeding this negative culture.”
In response to these assertions, the head of a major education union dismissed the notion that the education system was controlled by Marxists as “nonsense”. Kebede noted that industrial action must relate to teachers’ terms and conditions, and doubted whether the party would target these immediately upon entering government.
“The politician has crafted his political career on dog-whistle politics and currently, similar to other figures, he is lining up teachers and their unions for a conflict,” Kebede stated.
“I think that’s grossly irresponsible. I don’t – and nor does my union – push critical race theory as he claims … Should he become prime minister he would sell out our public services, particularly schooling … and the outcome would be catastrophic for education and children.”
Reform, which is leading the polls by about 10 points, has not set out much detail on its educational plans and does not appear to have designated an education lead.
Nonetheless, his comments suggested the party would overhaul the system and the curriculum. Farage declared: “We have got a massive job with education – truly monumental. And, we can’t do it in six months or a year; it will take us years, a long-term effort to reform.”
He stated that younger generations are receptive to critical thinking, but millennials were “absolutely hopeless”.
Paying tribute to a conservative activist, he commented: “All I want education to do to teach critical thinking – to instruct people that multiple perspectives exist and you make up your own mind rather than current practices where views are labeled good or bad. It’s a massive job in the UK and US.”
The party has conflicted with a major educators’ organization, after the union leader labeled them “extremist and prejudiced” and dismissed Farage as “a cheap imitation”.
Farage has accused the union head with being “an avowed radical” … someone who is absolutely determined that young minds be corrupted through education, their thinking tainted about everything to do with this country” and has argued that the organization seeks to brainwash teenagers against Reform.
Roughly a million individuals are employed in education in the UK, about half of whom are teachers and the others teaching assistants and support staff. The major education union has hundreds of thousands of members.
National strikes over teacher pay and conditions in recent years caused widespread disruption in educational institutions and extensive missed instruction for students.
At the US event, the Reform leader also pledged to help spread the online educational material of the Christian college in the UK. He stated organizations like it were “part of the fightback”, adding that: “I mean this. I’ll assist garner hundreds of thousands, if not millions of young people to these educational programs. I make that commitment tonight and I will follow through.”
The institution, a religious educational establishment, provides complimentary classes. According to its online description: “Comprehensive learning is vital for well-being and to maintain the benefits of freedom. The college furnishes these excellent programs for free to all who wish to learn.”
