Powerful cold-season winds caused walls to collapse upon fragile shelters housing people uprooted by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least four people. This tragedy underscores the perilous situation that persist after more than 24 months of intense airstrikes and severe lack of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Offers No Respite from Severe Elements

While a truce has been active from last fall, aid groups state that Palestinians do not have the adequate shelter required to withstand recurring cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which received the bodies, said on this week that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

In a separate incident, the local health authority announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy succumbed of hypothermia overnight.

"The world has enabled us to experience loss of life in every possible way," stated a family member following the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have paused for now, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Tent Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, 3 people of a single family — elderly a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall collapsed on top of their dwelling in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than 5 additional people were hurt in the event.

Family members on Tuesday started clearing the rubble that had entombed their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for survivors.

Humanitarian Efforts and Continuing Emergency

"Although 'bombings and shootings have slowed' under the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed reporters at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from Gaza City. "Therefore what the international community now terms calm would be viewed as a catastrophe anywhere else," he said.

Third Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s population of more than two million people has been struggling to keep the freezing temperatures and storms away while enduring lack of humanitarian aid and a absence of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently needed throughout the winter months. It’s the third winter since the war between the state and Hamas started on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked southern Israel and murdered around 1,200 people and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.
